A rotary joint (also called a rotary union) is a mechanical device that connects stationary supply and return piping to a rotating drum, roll, cylinder or spindle, so a fluid can flow into and out of the equipment while it turns. It has two essential elements:
Between them, a spring-loaded seal — typically a carbon face running against a hardened counter-face — closes the gap between the stationary and rotating parts. Internal guides or bearings keep the two parts aligned, and in dual flow designs a siphon pipe inside the joint carries the return medium (usually condensate) back out through the same connection end.
